Only 13 weeks until Spring!

Winter has arrived and while we have been blessed with a sunny start to the coldest season, we can tell by our toes that temperatures have been icy.

Some people relish the coldest month – for them it’s a time to snuggle up in front of the Coonara with a hot drink, or whizz down the slopes of whatever snowfield you can travel to, but for many people Winter brings with it feelings of sadness, changes in sleep patterns and a loss of enjoyment in many things.  These symptoms could be associated with the Seasonal Affective Disorder, known as SAD.

We can’t avoid Winter (unless you’re lucky to have a Northern Queensland hideaway at your disposal) but there are some tips that may help lift your mood and these include:

  • getting as much natural sunlight as possible
  • exercising regularly
  • reaching out to family, friends (and your local Community House 😊 )
  • eating healthy
  • finding out how what is causing your stress and developing ways to deal with it.

Remember the things that you like to do; while you can’t read a good book on the beach, you could read one snuggly warm in bed and while it’s not as inviting to walk while it’s gloomy outside – why not put on a coat and give it a go, you won’t know until you try it! You can still dance, cook and craft while it’s cold, just wear your slippers!

It might be harder than usual to deal with feeling gloomy in Winter when we are once again in lockdown and although SCH has physically closed its doors we are still here for a chat (phone or zoom) – just reach out!

Perhaps you can put your thinking cap on and come up with your own ideas about what activities we could be offering online that would appeal to community members. We’d love to know your ideas – and just remember, it’s only 13 weeks until SPRING!
